Loma del Norte in Albuquerque, NM
A 1970s pocket off Wyoming, north of Academy
Loma del Norte sits in 87109, on a grid of streets running north off Academy Rd NE and stopping at Wyoming Blvd. Most people shopping Loma del Norte homes for sale find the place by way of the park. There's a city park of the same name right at Loma del Norte and Wyoming, and it's the landmark everybody uses. The recorded plats read Dale J. Bellamah's Loma del Norte, which is why the title company's name for this neighborhood is longer than anyone's spoken name for it.
On the civic side it falls inside the Academy Acres North Neighborhood Association, which runs San Mateo and I-25 on the west, San Antonio on the north, Wyoming and Burlison on the east, and Academy on the south. Loma del Norte is the eastern end of that box.
The houses
Bellamah put a good share of postwar Albuquerque under roof. His pitch was better homes for more people for less money, and he built something north of 7,500 of them himself. The company kept building after he was gone and didn't close until 1989. Loma del Norte is late-run Bellamah, mid-to-late 1970s, and that distinction matters. The famous Bellamah houses are the small 1950s cinder-block ranches over in Princess Jeanne. These are bigger. Mostly single-story, mostly three bedrooms, generally somewhere in the 1,400 to 2,000 square foot range, with real two-car garages and stucco over frame instead of exposed block.
Lots are flat and rectangular, the standard suburban cut of that decade. Front yards are modest. Back yards are usually walled in block, with room for a covered patio, a shed, and a shade tree or two. The trees planted in 1975 are fifty years old now, and it shows on the good blocks. Streets are wide and curve just enough to discourage cut-through traffic. You'll see Territorial and Southwest Contemporary detailing on the remodels, but the base product is a plain 70s ranch.
Fair warning on what that means to own. Original kitchens and baths, single-pane aluminum windows, and swamp coolers on the roof are all still out there. Plenty of these houses have been redone once or twice. Plenty haven't. Ask about the roof and the sewer line before you ask about anything else. There is no HOA here, so no dues, no architectural committee, and nobody telling you what color to paint the door. That cuts both ways, and you can read the evidence up and down any given street.
The park is half the reason people buy here
Loma del Norte Park is roughly ten acres at Wyoming. The City lists a half-mile concrete loop on its Prescription Trails program, Grade 1, four to six feet wide. Flat and easy, fine with a stroller or a walker. Soccer fields, ball courts, tennis, two playgrounds, and enough mature trees to make actual shade in July. Two practical notes the city page is honest about: parking is on-street, and there are no public restrooms. The #31 bus stops about a tenth of a mile from the southwest corner.
Head a few blocks north on Wyoming and you reach North Domingo Baca Park at Carmel Ave NE, which is the bigger operation. Multigenerational center, skate park, leash-free dog areas, senior and youth programming. Between those two you cover most of a normal week without getting on a freeway.
Schools
Dennis Chavez Elementary sits at 7500 Barstow St NE, inside the neighborhood, close enough that kids walk to it. APS runs Chavez into Madison Middle, and Madison into La Cueva High. That La Cueva assignment moves more buyers onto these streets than anything else I could put on this page. Boundaries do get redrawn, so confirm the pattern with APS for the exact address before you write an offer.
Errands, work, and getting around
Sycamore Plaza is at the southeast corner of Academy and Wyoming, anchored by Walmart, Smith's and PetSmart, with HomeGoods in the same cluster. That's the five-minute run. Paseo del Norte is a couple of minutes north for the larger retail and the Flying Star out that way. For commuting, San Mateo and Osuna both feed I-25, and the Journal Center office park is close enough west that a fair number of people here drive under ten minutes to work. Downtown is a straight shot south on the interstate.
The Sandias sit right out the east windows of a lot of these houses, and the ground climbs steadily in that direction. The loma in the name isn't decoration.
Who it fits and who it doesn't
This works for a buyer who wants the La Cueva pattern and a genuine back yard without stretching to North Albuquerque Acres, and who isn't scared of a house that needs work. The neighborhood is built out. Nothing new goes up here, and the only new construction is somebody's addition. If your list starts with an open great room and a primary suite the size of a spare bedroom, you'll be remodeling to get there.
If what you want is a quiet, walkable, fully grown-in block with a park at the end of it, this is one of the more established addresses in the Northeast Heights, and it has been for half a century. Scroll the current listings on this page to see what's available.
