Stardust Skies in Albuquerque, NM
If you've been looking at Stardust Skies homes for sale, you've probably already noticed the thing that makes people slow down and take a second lap. The streets curve. In a city laid out on a hard grid, that stands out, and it was done on purpose.
Where it actually sits
This is the Northeast Heights, 87110, roughly the blocks between Candelaria and Comanche, with Louisiana on the west side and Wyoming on the east. Comanche Elementary is at 3505 Pennsylvania St NE, right in the middle of the neighborhood. Sandia High is a short hop southeast at 7801 Candelaria NE, and Cleveland Middle is over on Natalie. Being able to walk a kid to school is not something I can say about most of the Heights.
You're at about 5,300 feet here, so the Sandias fill the east windows and the light coming off them at the end of the day is the reason a lot of my clients stopped looking anywhere else.
Mossman built it, and that matters
Stardust Skies is a Mossman-Gladden neighborhood. If you're new to Albuquerque that name means nothing to you. Give it a month and you'll hear it constantly. Fred Mossman started building here in the late 1940s, Edward Gladden joined in 1948, and the company put up more than 7,500 houses around town before winding down in the early 1980s. Stardust Skies went in during the late 1960s and early 1970s, laid out directly east across Louisiana from Altamont, the firm's earlier project. UNM's Albuquerque Modernism archive still has the sales material: three or four bedrooms, roughly 2,100 square feet, about $26,500 at the time.
What that lineage buys you is brick. Solid masonry, pitched beamed ceilings, hardwood hiding under carpet in a good number of them, deep eaves, framing that wasn't cut to the bone. Mossmans hold up. That's the whole reason they trade differently than the frame-and-stucco product from the same decade.
The houses and the lots
Single story, single family, almost without exception. Lots run generous by anything built after 1990. Mature shade trees, a real backyard, room for a shed and a garden and still some grass. Most homes fall somewhere around 1,700 to 2,600 square feet with three or four bedrooms. You'll see plats listed in the MLS as Unit 3, Unit 6 and so on. Those are just build phases of the same subdivision, not separate neighborhoods, and nobody who lives here talks that way.
Now the honest part. These are sixty-year-old houses. Original panels, aging supply lines, swamp coolers still sitting on plenty of roofs, and a fair number of kitchens that last got attention during a different presidency. Refrigerated air is the most common upgrade and the first thing buyers ask me about. Scope the sewer line. Get on the roof. The bones are excellent and the systems are where the negotiation lives.
The park, and the disc golf situation
Stardust Skies Park at 4301 Pennsylvania NE is the center of gravity. Playground, heavy tree cover, and a 17-hole disc golf course that pulls players in from across the city. Most neighbors like it. A few homeowners along the fairways have opinions about stray drives. If a listing backs the park, go stand in the yard on a Saturday before you write anything.
North of Comanche the Bear Canyon Arroyo runs up toward Arroyo del Oso, where the city's 27-hole course at 7001 Osuna NE has been open since 1965, with the park and ball fields alongside it.
Getting around
Coronado Center and the Uptown shopping and restaurant cluster sit about a mile and a half south at Louisiana and Menaul. I-40 is five minutes down Louisiana or Wyoming. I-25 is maybe ten by way of Menaul or Montgomery. Downtown runs about twenty minutes outside of rush hour, Kirtland and the labs a little more. This is a close-in address, which is most of the point.
No HOA, but not unorganized
There's no homeowners association here. No dues, no architectural committee, no one telling you what color to paint the trim. What the area does have is two city-recognized neighborhood associations, Stardust Skies North and Stardust Skies Park, which is how residents weigh in on zoning cases and city projects. Different animal entirely, and worth knowing the difference.
Who it's for
Buyers who want a well-built mid-century brick house on a full-size lot, close to everything, and who are clear-eyed about spending money on mechanicals. It's one of the more established addresses in the Northeast Heights and nothing new is coming. The neighborhood finished building fifty years ago. If you want a two-story with a great room and a builder warranty, look at Ventana Ranch or the far northeast. If you want trees, brick and a five-minute drive to almost everything, this is the block.
