Supper Rock in Albuquerque, NM

Most Albuquerque neighborhoods are named after a developer's idea. This one is named after a rock people ate dinner on. Supper Rock sits at the base of the Sandias on the far east side of town, and the boulder it's named for is still there, in the middle of a city park, with a playground built around it. Buyers looking at Supper Rock homes for sale are usually after the same thing the picnickers were a century ago: the mountain right there, and the sunset behind them over the valley.

Roughly, you're between Juan Tabo and Tramway, south of Lomas, in 87123. Chelwood Vista is to the north. Four Hills Village and Singing Arrow are south of you.

A neighborhood named after a picnic spot

The name goes back at least to the 1910s. The Rotary Club held its "first mesa picnic of the season" out here in 1916. There was a Memorial Day gathering in 1918 with a state Supreme Court justice speaking and the Indian School band playing. In 1934 a couple got married on top of the rock. UNM students kept a big painted "U" on the hillside nearby, and the freshman and sophomore football players repainted it in October 1931 before the Occidental game. None of that is on a plaque anywhere. You just have to know.

What the houses are actually like

The city caught up to the rock in the 1940s. Sandia Manor opened for public inspection in 1948, about a quarter mile north of what was then the 1200 block of East Central, and the rest filled in over the following decades. Apache Elementary opened in 1967, which tells you roughly when the bulk of the rooftops arrived.

Today the neighborhood association counts ten separate subdivisions under the Supper Rock name. That matters more than it sounds. No single builder, no unified look, no master plan. You'll walk one street of low-slung 1960s ranches with gravel roofs and then turn onto another with 1970s and early-'80s Southwest Contemporary: flat roofs, stucco, deep-set windows, the occasional real adobe. Lots run generous by modern standards. Mature trees, which in this city is not nothing. Block walls instead of the shared-fence-with-your-neighbor arrangement you get in newer tracts.

It's built out. Nobody is putting up new construction here, so everything that trades is resale, and condition swings hard house to house. Some have been kept beautifully. Some still have the original kitchen and a swamp cooler on borrowed time. Be honest with yourself about which one you're buying. I've watched buyers fall for the lot and the view and gloss right over a roof that needed doing.

The park, the trails, and the view

Supper Rock Park runs about six acres off Monte Alto Dr NE. Playground, open grass, walking paths, and the rock itself, which kids climb. It's a dog neighborhood. You'll meet half of it on those paths before eight in the morning. Dale Bellemah Park over on Juan Tabo is the other one people actually use.

For real hiking, the Embudo Canyon trailhead at the east end of Indian School Rd NE is a short drive north. Embudo Trail #193 and the Foothills Trail #365 both start there, parking is free, and the Sandia Foothills Open Space is open every day of the year. Being this close to the mountain is the whole argument for the neighborhood. West-facing lots get the city lights. East-facing ones get the Sandias going red at sundown, which is how the mountain got its name in the first place.

Getting around and getting groceries

This is a car neighborhood. No point pretending otherwise. Tramway Blvd is right there for a straight shot north, Juan Tabo drops you onto Central, and I-40 is a few minutes either way. Downtown is a real commute at rush hour. Kirtland and the Sunport are easier than the map makes them look.

Shopping is the Juan Tabo corridor: the Manzano Shopping Center at Lomas and Juan Tabo, then the bigger box cluster further along with Walmart, Target, Sam's Club and Hobby Lobby. Dining leans toward familiar chains plus a few long-running local New Mexican places. If you want the restaurant scene you're driving to Nob Hill or Uptown. That's the trade you're making.

Schools and the neighborhood association

Apache Elementary sits on Copper Ave NE inside the neighborhood and generally feeds Kennedy Middle and Manzano High. Boundaries get redrawn, so check a specific address with APS rather than trusting any listing sheet.

The Supper Rock Neighborhood Association has been going since 1987. It's voluntary, not an HOA. No mandatory dues, no architectural committee telling you what color the front door can be, and no covenant enforcement either. Meetings run at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, and the group does things like chase down tree-planting grants. If you want an association that polices your neighbor's RV, this isn't it. If you want to paint your own house and park your own trailer, it is.

Who it suits

People who want the foothills without foothills money. Addresses further north along Tramway cost more for a comparable view, and the newer product on the west side buys you a newer house and a much longer drive to a trailhead. Supper Rock is one of the more established addresses at the southern end of the Northeast Heights, and it prices like an established neighborhood rather than a marquee one.

It won't suit everyone. You'll drive for almost everything. Plenty of the houses need updating, and the association can't make anyone repaint. But if the mountain out the kitchen window is the point, that's a fair bargain.
